Manchester Baptist Church  History

1948
Prayer Meetings began in different homes.  A mission was later started at the home of Jackson and Euna Forrester.

1950
The Prayer Meeting participants combined and raised money and purchased the old Evangelical United Bretheren Church on High Street in the town of Manchester for $1,200.00.  There were 36 charter (original) members.

1953
Edgar and Delora Shanks donated 3 acres of ground to the group (now the present site)

1957
Groundbreaking services were held for the construction of the new church building on the present site on February 17th.  The building and furniture combined cost $38,000.00.  The building was completed and a dedication service was held in October.

1959
Started Calvary Southern Mission in Hanover, Pennsylvania.

1964
The parsonage (pastor's house) was built at a cost of $16,500.00.

1966
The cemetary was dedicated and named "The Edgar S. Shanks Memorial Cemetary."

1974
The mortgage for the church building was burnt.

1975
The church's 25th anniversary was celebrated in April.

1978
The mortgage for the parsonage was burnt.

1979
The road that the church is on was dedicated and named "Manchester Baptist Church Road."

1980
The "Together We Build" campaign was launched in order to raise money to build an expansion and make renovations to the old church building.  Pledges of $175,000.00 were received.

1981
Groundbreaking for the expansion took place.

1982
The renovations and expansion were completed and dedicated.  The project included a new sanctuary with an overflow room, a library, an office, a pastor's office, new bathrooms, and air conditioning.  The church was "modernized."

1987
A new church pavilion was built and dedicated.

1990
The 40th anniversary of the church was celebrated in April.

1991
Our church partnered other Southern Baptist churches to begin a Mission Church in Littlestown, Pennsylvania.

1994
A new (our current) children's playground was built to replace the old one.

1995
A group of men went on a mission trip to Kingston, Jamaica.
AWANA programs begin.
The pavilion is dedicated to Robert Royer

1997
The mortgage to the church addition and renovations was burned.
A group of men went on a mission trip to Kingston, Jamaica for the 2nd time.

1998
The church sign was dedicated to honor Dan & Rose Quinley.
The church purchased a bus.

1999
A group of teenagers went on a mission trip to North Carolina

2000
The 50th anniversary of the church was celebrated in April.
